How’d you get involved with WISPIRG? – I said to myself one day – “you know what Scott ol’ boy, its about time you stop playing professional football and professional basketball – its just too much. set those petty things aside and start working to save the environment.”
Highlight of WISPIRG? Stopping a coal plant
What are you up to right now? Rocking a statewide coalition of environmental student leaders. We are working for global warming legislation and we are gonna get it. Right now we have Stevens Point, Milwaukee, Northland, LaCrosse, Milwaukee and of course Madison on board. Aren’t we awesome?
Favorite Movie? Anything by Wes Anderson

POWER SHIFT

Tabulation.
Do the table!
Big Red Go Green has been doing a veritable butt-ton of work to bring a big concert act to campus to raise global warming awareness and promote green living on campus. Although there is no official word on the act just yet… we have made some huge progress on this over the past few weeks.
BRGG has connected with the 10,000 hours festival to bring the show to campus and we actually can begin registering. Basically you need to log 10 hours of volunteer activity to get yourself a free ticket. The goal is that they find 1000 people to commit 10 hours… and then you have the 10,000 hours festival. Get it? Coolio.
Wellllllll here are the most basic instructions on what you need to do to rock a free ticket.
1. Volunteer at least 10 hours with local non-profit organizations
2. Create and account and log your hours at www.10000hoursmadison.org.
3.Log your hours by April 1st to get your FREE ticket
I think that is pretty much it. If you have questions send an e-mail to 10kdcoutreach@gmail.com or hit up your friendly BRGG coordinator Matt Wessale, he always has time to help.
Some tabling was done to get some people registered and raise awareness about the concert today at the lit tables in the Rath.

WISPIRG Retreat
Almond WI (with a total size of roughly 1 square mile according to Wikipedia) and Camp Helen Brachman played host to a meeting of the minds at this semester’s retreat. Its always a great opportunity to network with the other state PIRG chapters and remember just how awesome the PIRG system is, serving to unite the state and the country’s best student activists. We laughed, we cried, we played apples to apples (btw our board chair in Madison, Tony Uhl is quite possible the worst apples to apples player ever), but most importantly we organized.
The day started off pretty horribly on Saturday as a snow storm delayed our adventure by roughly four hours. After the roads had cleared (and after Milwaukee’s PIRG chapter spent a couple hours drinking coffee and shopping at Kohls to stave off boredom) we piled into our respective vehicles (unfortunately they were cars and not a high speed rail line…) and drove off to the quaint locality known as Almond (NOT “ahl-mind” “al-mind”). The setup at Camp Helen Brachman was pretty nice. Situated off of a lake, it had some pretty scenic views of the natural beauty of Almond. The cabin we slept in was pretty cozy as well – complete with fireplace and some pretty comfy couches.
We got to work, hashing out plans about the statewide goals, campaigns and strategies. What we are planning is nothing short of epic. Do I hear two statewide postcard collecting drives? Yes. Do i hear statewide global warming summit in Madison for after Powershift? Yes. Do I hear statewide tour of proposed high speed rail line right after school gets out? Yes. Do I hear plot to assert interstellar WISPIRG dominance in the Milky Way Galaxy? Yes. Well actually no on the last one, but the other ones are all legit and are all going to be going on this semester.
Overall it was pretty sweet. If you went I’m sure you had a decent time, if you didn’t, you should make it out next time.

More tabling yo
BRGG had some developments this week – a new postcard has replaced our petition and we will be gathering 3000 of those by the end of the semester in support of global warming legislation. Also, as was previously mentioned, Governor Doyle announced he is switching the charter street coal plant to biomass. We combined these two things in our most recent tabling and made a thank you card for Governor Doyle and collected 108 postcards in support of global warming legislation. Basically BRGG back at it again doing what we do best – tabling for some grassroots support.
Im writing this entry at 1:49 in my bed at WISPIRG retreat.

Daily Cardinal says “Good riddance to coal plant.”
Check it out – after sending in press releases and letters to the editor, the Daily Cardinal editorial board has come out in aggreance with Big Red Go Green and WISPIRG (we are mentioned in the piece) that the switch of the Charter street coal plant to become a biomass plant is a welcomed development for the UW campus and for Madison as a whole.
Kudos to our media intern Nadav and one of our volunteers, Ben for their work on LTEs. Even though they didn’t end up in the student papers, I would argue that they probably pushed the editorial board to write this article.

Eco Party Pizza Pimpin
One of our biggest campaigns for this whole year has been the planning and organizing of the eco-party. this semester we are coalitioning with some other groups to hopefully put on a huge music/green/earth/love festival. In the meantime we are selling some za’s to make some dough (haha) to fundraise for what is sure to be a kickass party. Check out our latest pizza sale -
